Samora Moisés Machel (29 September 1933 – 19 October 1986) was a Mozambican military commander and political leader.
He served as the first President of Mozambique from the country's independence in 1975.
He was a "Freedom Fighter" against Portuguese colonialism before the independence of Mozambique in 1975.
As President, he supported political and military the Liberation Movements in Zimbabwe (Zanu and Zapu), South Africa (ANC) and Namibia (Swapo).
He strongly criticized the Apartheid as Crime against the Humanity system and demanded the unconditional release of Nelson Mandela from prison.
He was a Strong Pan Africanist.
Machel died in office in 1986 when his presidential aircraft crashed near the Mozambican-South African border.
There's a strong belief that the airplane crash was not a accident, but a murder.
